LRRA President Tommy Mathieu leads with experience
Little Rock Realtor Association (LRRA) President Tommy Mathieu does not possess the normal credentials that are usually associated with the office of president. Yet, his 18-year experience in the oil industry and 17-year tenure in the appraisal business equips Mathieu with a unique set of skills to lead the LRRA. The opportunity to lead one of the largest Realtor associations in the state humbles Mathieu.
Author details war on the homefront
Steve Teske, Encyclopedia of Arkansas staff member, discusses the ways Arkansans contributed to both the Spanish-American War and World War I. The knowledgeable historian presented his research during the Butler's Center's Legacies & Lunch series. The series is free and open to the public and held the first Wednesday of each month.
Blogging for sport: a real bore
It was the first day of a new decade, yet it began like all others, save the fact that I felt like someone had beat me repeatedly with a tire iron while I wasn’t looking.
Our house had been commandeered the previous night by a throng of reveling teenagers, leaving my husband and me to ring in the new year sequestered in our room - one we had redecorated for the occasion with a couple of kitchen chairs positioned opposite the miniature television, circa 1996, in what stagers call a “conversation grouping.”
Kay's Cooking Corner
When I was younger, I thought I would never live to see 2010 – it seemed so far away. However, I thought being 50 years old was ancient and I would never live to be that age either. I have been proven wrong on both accounts (obviously!), and I am really glad! In fact, now that I am “older,” 90 is looking kinda young to me!
Local author Trenton Lee Stewart brings suspense to readers for the third time
There is a New York Times bestselling author among us. His name is Trenton Lee Stewart and he lives right here in Little Rock. My book club was first introduced to this literary mastermind in his first book, The Mysterious Benedict Society. I wrote a review about it at the end of 2007. Here is a brief excerpt from my review, “In his first children’s novel, Stewart seeks to recruit a team of kids to save the world in a clever, Harry ‘Potteresque’ book. Reynard “Reynie” Muldoon, George “Sticky” Washington, Kate Wetherall and Constance Contraire make up the gifted child squad.
The Critic's Corner
Every December, film critics feel compelled to publish their lists of the best movies of the year. If you compiled these articles into a single document, you’d have to level an entire forest to acquire the necessary wood pulp. Of course, that’s not going to stop me from throwing in my two cents!
Capital City Chatter
After a lovely, long vacation in Colorado, I’m back to work. Last Monday, I was a little rusty. I had to remember how to type, send and receive email and stay focused for an eight-hour period. Well, the typing and email steps came back in a few seconds, but sitting in front of the computer for a lengthy period of time was a challenge. After our 15-hour drive to the Rockies, I’m used to sitting, but I could dose off in the passenger seat if I felt the urge. If I get the urge at work, I have to either fill up my coffee cup or shake it off.
It must be true
Happy New Decade. But not for everyone, especially a guy in Michigan who may have to go to jail for up to a year, all because he was shooting some hoops in his front yard. The man is a 23-year old who is now classified as a sex offender because when he was 17 he was caught having sex with his 15-year-old girlfriend. The law in the Great Lakes State says that sex offenders must never get within 1000 feet of a school, and his front yard is 326 feet from one. Maybe it’s time to think about moving because he will remain on the list until 2028.
Financial Focus
Financial moves for the newly single
We can’t always escape the sad events in our lives — but we still need to carry on. Obviously, for a married person, a divorce or the death of a spouse is a traumatic event. But if either event happens to you, you’ll need to make some financial moves to keep your life on track.
Natural State Snapshots
According to a plaque outside of the Gann Museum in Benton, Ark., the structure was built in 1893 and served as the office for Dr. Dewell Gann. The building was given to the City of Benton in 1946 to be used as a library and eventually a museum. It is the only known bauxite building in existence.
House to House
Banks in an unenviable position
When the subprime lending market crashed a couple of years ago, mortgage banks got criticized for lending money too liberally.
So they have – by and large – tightened up their lending require-ments. Now they’re catching flack for being too conserva-tive in their lend-ing policies.
Selling houses in the winter
ecnobles@att.net
Typically, homes sales slow down in the winter.
According to the Arkansas Realtors Association (ARA), that pattern repeated in 2009 – there were 4,392 homes sold in the first quarter of the year in Arkansas, making those three months the slowest of the year in terms of sales activity.
Why has the number of Realtors in Arkansas declined?
Special to the Daily Record ecnobles@att.net
Over the past year, the number of Realtors in Arkansas has declined from around 8,200 to 7,600.
Bob Walker, immediate past president of the Arkansas Realtors Association (ARA), said there are a number of reasons why there are now around 600 fewer Realtors in Arkansas than there were a year ago.
