It’s not that easy building green
An author accused of plagiarism and copyright infringement was asked why he chose well-known works and distinguished authors to steal from, to which he responded “Well, gosh, I wouldn’t want to filch from just anybody!!” This column unashamedly plunders Clif McKinney’s summary of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) which appears in the Spring 2009 issue of the Arkansas Real Estate Review, for that very same reason. Clif is chair of the Arkansas Bar Association’s Real Estate Section.

The importance of understanding what clients want

Jane Loeber, a Realtor with Re/Max Real Estate Connection in Cabot, said one of the reasons she started a real estate career in 1998 was because she understands the needs of a variety of clients.

Kay's Cooking Corner
It is so hard to eat healthy during the holidays. Think about your menu: Turkey or Ham (that’s not so bad), Dressing with Giblet Gravy, Sweet Potato Casserole, Green Bean Casserole, Cheesy Tater-tot Casserole, Corn Casserole – sound familiar? Talk about a starch overload!

Curb appeal doesn’t have to cost a fortune

The National Association of Realtors (NAR), quoting a 2009 cost versus value report, says that boosting the appeal of your home to potential buyers doesn't have to cost a lot but could help move your house quicker.

The Critic's Corner
I’m at a loss as to how to begin my review of “Avatar,” the new 3D science fiction film from writer and director James Cameron (“Aliens,” “Terminator 2,” “Titanic”). After staring at a blank document for several minutes, I felt compelled to start hitting keys, and that desperate act resulted in the previous sentence. It feels liberating to see something on the screen, even if it has nothing to do with the movie.

It must be true
It’s a great time of year for movies. Someone asked me the other day while I was standing in line at a concession stand what my all time favorite flick was. Off the top of my head I couldn’t seem to come up with just one. But I was able to narrow it down to 35, which are listed below along with a quote; and in pretty close order to how I would rank them.

Using decorative staging to attract buyers and increase appeal

Special to the Daily Record ecnobles@att.net
According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), some of the most important steps a homeowner can take when putting his home on the market are cleaning and decluttering.
Cleaning and decluttering fall under the general heading of “staging.” The NAR, quoting staging expert Barb Schwartz of StagedHomes.com, said staged homes sell about 50 percent quicker and for about 7 percent more than nonstaged homes. Those are national figures and may or may not apply to Arkansas, but Danielle Newton of Stage Coaches Inc. in Cabot said she has some research showing that staging does bring results – a definite plus in current markets where sellers are looking to add that little extra something to attract buyers.

Looking back on the past decade

Arkansas Realtors Association Ethan@ArkansasRealtors.com
For better or worse, the real estate industry has been big news throughout the naughts – or whatever we’re calling 2000 through 2009.
Actually, my mother cynically suggested calling these past 10 years “the negative decade” due to economic doldrums, terrorist attacks and such. My daughter, Brenda SueCarol, has advanced the argument the decade should be named after her because she was born in 2000. She could have a point. After all, calling the past 10 years something snappy like the “Brendacade” has a fair chance of catching on with the public.
