Honoring the veterans of the Korean War
A memorial in MacArthur Park pays tribute to the men and women who fought in the Korean War. A separate memorial next to the soldier reads, “The nation which forgets its defenders will itself be forgotten” — President Calvin Coolidge.

Eighth Circuit Recent Decisions
White v. National Football League, United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, No. 08-2001 (November 10, 2009).

This case arises out of the a grievance procedure brought by the NFL following Michael Vick’s, then quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, plea of guilty to federal dog fighting charges and subsequent suspension from the NFL. Through the grievance procedure, the League sought a declaration that the Falcons could recover certain bonus money that had been paid to Vick with the expectation that he would play football through 2014.

Thank you
It is 8:07 Monday night. My deadline for this column has been cut by the celebration of Veteran’s Day. I started writing my column 30 minutes ago and just lost it.
I am writing the column in an e-mail since the computer I am on does not have Word-Perfect. I hate Word.

Court summaries
King v. City of Little Rock, 2009 Ark. App. 733, Nov. 4, 2009.
This appeal comes from the Arkansas Workers’ Compensation Commission.
On December 1, 2004, appellant Douglas King, a former patrolman for the Little Rock Police Department, was rear-ended while driving his patrol car. When his car was hit, Mr. King struck his head against the plexiglass shield behind his seat. Initially, the appellee City of Little Rock paid for some medical benefits relating to the injury, but later controverted Mr. King’s claim.

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners approved a proposal last week to develop a new model for determining the regulatory treatment of residential mortgage-backed securities. “Some men are Baptists, others Catholics, my father was an Oldsmobile man.” (A Christmas Story)
So I’m driving home last Thursday afternoon feeling pretty good as I weave my way through the heavy flow headed west, when all of a sudden my digital dash lights up like a western Mississippi slot machine.

Kay's Cooking Corner
Last October I wrote an article on sweet potatoes and yams, and the differences between them — something that is easily and often confused. However, real yams are not even related to sweet potatoes, and they aren’t even very sweet. This isn’t a repeat of that article, but I will give you more “Sweet Potato Knowledge” and share another yummy recipe. It is one our favorites at Thanksgiving.

More from The New Yorker
Last week we were discussing The New Yorker. Or I was. It is the best literary bargain on the market. Cartoons, poetry, fiction, journalism and art: all for a dollar a week.
I’d pointed out some humor in a story in the Oct. 19 issue and segued into the opening sentence of a story in the Oct. 26 issue. “Procedure in Plain Air,” by Jonathan Lethem, a novelist eight times over, begins:
