Kay's Cooking Corner
Thanksgiving Day – it will soon be history. All the rushing and baking we do for the gathering of our family and friends will soon just be another good memory. Great food, great times together, great football game. For some of us, anyway.
However, there are some that will not have a meal, unless the more fortunate of us help. One of the most important things we can do at Thanksgiving is to help feed the homeless and/or the poor. When you go shopping, to purchase an extra can of green beans or corn or some yams for the food bank or the Union Mission will not cost that much, but it will mean the difference between eating or not for someone else. Think about it. Every little can helps.

Catering to You offers one-stop shopping

Ever too tired to cook? Too lazy to cook? Have no time to cook? Can’t cook?
Catering To You has just the solution for us time-challenged working moms, non-Martha Stewarts and otherwise lazy bones. If you find yourself in a bind and don’t want a $1 hamburger and fries for your kids’ dinner, stop by for some like-homemade casseroles and side dishes just like mom used to make.

The Critic's Corner
I’m going to begin my review of the film, “This Is It,” with a disclaimer. You’ll understand why in a moment:
When it comes to Michael Jackson, I’m neither a fan nor a detractor. I don’t count myself among those who adored the ground on which he moonwalked, nor did his quirky behavior put me off, nor do I revile him for his alleged sexual abuse of adolescents. My ambivalence has nothing to do with him; I simply don’t listen to pop music and I’m skeptical when the media portrays a famous person in a bad light.

Capital City Chatter
I really enjoy getting things on sale and bragging about my savings. You could say it’s in my blood; my mom is a bargain hunter. Whenever we go shopping, we bypass the new, pricey merchandise and head to the back where the store usually keeps the sale items. I recently applied this tactic at Ann Taylor. I could spend my entire paycheck at this store; their clothes are professional and classic. A large 40 percent sign caught my attention and a magnet-like force pulled me into the store.

It must be true
The following trivia came from my good friend Wanda here at The Daily Record.
Men can read smaller print than women can; women can hear better.
Coca-Cola was originally green.
It is impossible to lick your elbow.
The state with the highest percentage of people who walk to work: Alaska.

Have you built your investment pyramid?
Of the “Seven Wonders of the Ancient World,” the only one still in existence is the Great Pyramid of Giza. This tells you something about the strength of the pyramid structure, but it also suggests that the pyramid may be a good metaphor for other endeavors that you wish to endure — such as your investment strategy.

House to House
When can I take advantage of that new tax credit?
By Ethan C. Nobles
Arkansas Realtors® Association Ethan@ArkansasRealtors.com
As a lot of people know by now, the new home buyer tax credit was signed into law on Nov. 6 and was effective the next day.
Regardless, there’s one question we’ve gotten a lot at the Arkansas Realtors Association — when can a buyer purchase a house to be eligible for the credit? Anyone who got a home under contract on Nov. 7 and beyond and met certain income requirements was eligible for the credit.

Local boards of Realtors say their members help communities

Special to the Daily Record ecnobles@att.net
Realtors typically belong to at least three organizations — the National Association of Realtors, the Arkansas Realtors Association and a local board.
Larry Davis, executive officer of the Benton-Bryant Realtors Association, said one of the primary activities of those local boards involves helping Realtors organize themselves into groups tackling projects that help their communities.

Home buyer tax credit extended, expanded

Special to the Daily Record ecnobles@att.net
On Nov. 6, President Barack Obama signed a bill into law that extends and expands the first-time home buyer tax credit that was set to expire on Nov. 30.
Under the old tax credit, eligible buyers had to close on homes by Nov. 30 to take advantage of the credit. That deadline has been extended – eligible buyer must have homes under contract by April 30 and close on them by July 1 under the new law.
