A great and new deed
Eric Howard (right) receives congratulations from Jed Hefner on his new home. Hefner, the previous owner, lived there as a child with his mother when it was Little Rock's first Habitat for Humanity home. Hefner deeded it back to Habitat and the Little Rock Realtors Association was on hand to help remodel the home so it could be presented to Howard.
Dale Carnegie Leadership Award presentation
Mayor Mark Stodola receives the Dale Carnegie Leadership Award on behalf of the City of Little Rock on Oct. 30 from Kevin J. Sensenig, Ph.D., Dale Carnegie and Associates, Inc. Little Rock was recognized for its ongoing commitment to development of human resources, innovation and organizational creativity.
Kay's Cooking Corner
Not very long ago, Don received a basket of fruit, cheese and crackers from one of our clients, expressing wishes for his continued recovery. It was from Harry and David’s, and I don’t know if you have ever had any of the pears from Harry and David’s or not, but if you ever get the chance, don’t turn them down!
Holiday House is a one-stop marvel
It’s somewhat hard to get in the holiday spirit with temperatures in the mid 70s. Perhaps if all the rain that’s been falling on Central Arkansas was white, fluffy snow, we could all be a bit jollier. Fortunately, the Junior League of Little Rock (JLLR) is ahead of the game and preparing to host the 19th annual Holiday House this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the State House Convention Center. Dubbed as the “shopping event of the season,” it’s an event that must go on the calendar and not be missed.
The Critic's Corner
“Law Abiding Citizen” opens with a scene of devastating violence that made me angry on behalf of Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler), the only surviving victim of the crime. And it ended with me wishing I’d never given Shelton, or the movie, the time of day.
Capital City Chatter
I blame Hollywood and the media for my fascination and yearning for a Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration. Since I was old enough to watch the ball drop at midnight, I’ve wanted to be right in the middle of that crazy scene. Bring in the New Year with a million strangers? Yes, that is precisely what I want to do.
It must be true
Once again, it’s time for the Darwin Award Nominees. The Darwin’s are awarded every year to the persons who died in a, shall we say, less than noble way. This years nominees (with names changed to protect the dearly departed) are:
1. A mechanic in Alamo, MI, who was killed in March as he was trying to repair what police describe as a “farm-type truck.”
Financial Focus
What should you do with 401(k) after a layoff?
As you’re no doubt aware, the long and deep recession has resulted in the highest unemployment rate in decades.
But if you’ve been laid off, or if you fear a layoff may soon be coming, you’re less interested in statistics than in your immediate financial future.
Natural State Snapshots
On Oct. 29, huge red Powerballs like the one featured above were found floating above the Little Rock sky line. The Arkansas Scholarship Lottery Commission wanted to promote the arrival of Powerball in a unique way. This 12 foot in diameter ball was tethered to the Junction Bridge.

Maximizing your MLS listing
By Ethan C. Nobles
Arkansas Realtors Association Ethan@ArkansasRealtors.com
One of the most effective marketing tools a Realtor has is the multiple listing service, but is your agent maximizing its potential?
An MLS, simply put, is a database where information on properties for sale are stored. All Realtors® who are members of the MLS can show its properties to potential buyers. Furthermore, national sites such as Realtor.com pull data MLS systems around the nation so people from, say, Colorado looking for homes in Arkansas can conveniently browse through properties on the Internet.
Being at the right place at the right time

Glen Rega – a Conway real estate broker for almost 33 years – said he’s attributed his success in life to simply being on hand when opportunities came knocking.
“I’ve lived kind of a Forrest Gump life,” he said. “I’ve always been at the right place at the right time and I’ve gotten to do a lot of things.”
An end to low interest rates?
Special to the Daily Record
ecnobles@att.net
On Nov. 3, the average rate on a 30-year, fixed interest mortgage was at 4.77 percent as reported by Zillow.com.
The Federal Reserve is contemplating ending a program that has been largely responsible for the historically low interest rates enjoyed by home buyers over the past year. The day after Thanksgiving last year, the Federal Reserve announced a plan to buy back $500 billion in mortgage-backed securities held by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Central Arkansas homes sales up in September
Special to the Daily Record ecnobles@att.net
Thanks to low interest rates, dropping prices and a tax credit, homes sales were up in September as compared to the same month a year ago.
According to the Arkansas Realtors Association (ARA), sales through Arkansas had been down for 42 straight months until gaining ground in July, fell again in August and then entered positive territory again in September.
