I imagine some think it takes a special “talent” or “gift” in order to write a good column. Well, in a way it does. It takes the gift of gab, and as you have recently seen, my sister and I have both been blessed with it! How else could she have written such wonderful columns during my absence? They were so good that now I know who to turn to when I need a small vacation!

Festival of Wines swirls into North Little Rock Oct. 1

Crowds will gather once again at the Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock on the first of October. Although, the throng of people won’t be watching the Travelers, they will be sipping and sampling foods at the sixth annual Festival of Wines. The festival is presented by The Jack Stephens Heart Center at St. Vincent and will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1 at the ballpark.

The Critic's Corner
In the beginning, when God created Hollywood, He commanded the movie studios to release their worst films during January and August of each year. January, because people are too exhausted from the holidays to go to the movies, and August to create a buffer between the blockbusters of summer and the Oscar contenders of fall. Simply put, seeing a new film during these two months can be hell on Earth.

Capital City Chatter
There is a new man in my life. I haven’t known him very long, but I’m already in love. I wasn’t expecting to meet him, but he decided he was ready nonetheless. Parish knows about him and he knows how I feel about him. Parish feels the same way. I’m talking about my brand new baby nephew that was born around midnight on Sept. 20. We weren’t ready for him because he came about 16 weeks early. He weighs a whopping 1 lb. 4 oz. We call him “Baby J” and he might be the most precious thing I have ever laid my eyes on.

Lessons from a bear market
If you invest for many years, you’ll eventually encounter both bull and bear markets. Although you obviously prefer seeing the bull, you may actually learn more from the bear — and when it’s “hibernating,” you can put these lessons to good use in making investment moves for the future.

It must be true
A grandmother is someone who pretends she doesn’t know who you are on Halloween. — Erma Bombeck
With October’s arrival this week, my wife Kathy reminded me of the time when our kids were very young and our house had a garden at the back of the yard. Our son Matt was in first grade and his sister Alexis, was 2. When September rolled around that year, Kathy suggested to them that they plant some pumpkin seeds in time for Halloween. The kids were all over that idea and the three of them marched down the hill to the back 40.

Natural State Snapshots

By Ethan C. Nobles

As buyers have no doubt heard time and time again, there’s just not a whole lot of time left to find a home and close on it prior to the deadline of Nov. 30 for the first time home buyer tax credit.

Before 2005, Lisa Burks was working for the state of Arkansas in a job where she filed and adjudicated unemployment claims.
“Basically, I decided who paid under the law and who didn’t,” she said. “It was a big responsibility. It was a real high-stress job.”

Yes, ‘zero down’ loans are still available

Special to the Daily Record ecnobles@att.net
A Little Rock Realtor said he’s still able to find loans that require buyers to make no down payments, but there are a number of eligibility requirements to keep in mind.
Conventional wisdom suggests that the days of the “zero down” loan ended when the subprime lending crisis hit a couple of years ago and banks started tightening up their lending requirements.
