Art Walk in Argenta brings culture with each footstep
Rebecca Brockman
On the third Friday of every month, from 5 to 8 p.m., the Argenta district in North Little Rock hosts an Art Walk on the sidewalks of the city. This event is great for families, especially for parents who are worried about bringing their little ones into art galleries.
The Art Walk venues include: Argenta Bead, Argenta Studios, Arkansas Art Gallery, Art Attack, Baker Bed and Breakfast, Café La Pace, Claytime Pottery and Studio, Galaxy Furniture, Greg Thompson Fine Art, HDMS Inc. (Hicks, Dowty, McCauley & Schell), Satori School, Starving Artist Café and the THEA Foundation.
Additionally, there are artist tents set up along Main Street. As you can see from the list, not all of the venues are art related, but they all open their doors during the event and offer a variety of entertainment.
For example, at the last Art Walk on July 17, the Baker House B-n-B (5th and Main St.), featured Arkansas certified local food products and art. Local artists Elena Petroukhina and Rhonda Reeves were on hand to offer a tantalizing taste of local foods from the Arkansas Certified Farmers’ Market.
At Greg Thompson Fine Art (421 Main Street), art walkers can enjoy the Inaugural Show, which ends September 7. It includes J.O. Buckley, Mark Blaney, Matt McLeod, Barry Thomas, Caroll Cloar, Thomas Hart Benton and others.
Art Attack (705 Main Street) is one of Argenta’s newest galleries. The gallery held their grand opening at the end of July, but will be ready for an art walk welcome on Aug. 21. Satori School (417 Main Street) is also a new Argenta hot spot. Accomplished photographer and potter Larry Pennington and watercolor artist Robin Young are the owners and founders of the studio.
Satori will offer adult classes in acrylics, drawing, printmaking, photography, pottery and watercolor and a pottery class for young artists (7-12 years of age) starting at the end of July.
The school is housed in the same building as Pennington Photography Studio and ClayTime Studio & Gallery.
After visiting Satori’s Web site, I’m thinking about taking a pottery class! I took a pottery
class in college and it didn’t go so well, but I’m willing to give the art medium another try. Classes are six weeks long and the autumn session starts Sept. 28.
I was somewhat familiar with all of the other venues, but had never really heard of HDMS Inc.. After some investigative reporting, I found out that HDMS is a full service Architectural and Interior Design Firm with both licensed architects and licensed interior designers.
According to their Web site, HDMS inc. has experience in the design of restaurants, hotels, apartments, condominiums, shopping centers, convenience stores, and other retail oriented projects.
The company has also gained additional experience coordinating construction activities of these same projects. They also offer real estate brokerage services through their sister company Bartlett-Hicks Realty.
When I complete my pottery classes at Satori, I’m heading straight over to the Argenta Bead Company (703 N Main Street). The store offers classes in beadwork and jewelry making. Beaders can also peruse their store to find unique beads from all over the world.
So, there is a lot more to Art Walk than just looking at art. The local event provides an opportunity to check out a variety of places in Argenta in a simple sweep.
Make plans to attend the next Third Friday Argenta Art Walk on Aug. 21.
