October promises to be a busy month in the Capital City
Rebecca Brockman
September’s desk calendar page is now in the recycle bin. I’m looking at the new month on my calendar and wondering where the summer went. Didn’t we just celebrate the Fourth of July? Pretty soon we will be carving the turkey and wrestling someone for the last Tickle Me Elmo doll. Holiday row is right around the corner and I haven’t even floated the Buffalo yet. Ready or not, fall is here and there are a lot of events to attend to pass the time until the ball drops at midnight.
One October event that I’ve heard a lot about since I moved here is the Tales of the Crypt. After some more research and talking to someone directly involved, I’m planning on going. On Oct. 13 (it always takes place the second Tuesday in October), the Mt. Holly Cemetery comes alive. Well, kind of. Parkview students dress up and portray some of Arkansas’ most influential people in history. Guided tours start at 5:30 until 8:30 p.m. The tour visits 16 characters in total. This event sounds educational and enjoyable. Call 501-447-2362 for additional information about this unique and free event.
One fun fall event I have done since I lived here is a corn maze. Parish and I visited Schaefers corn maze in Mayflower. Everyone should try a corn maze at least once in his or her lifetime. It’s an interesting experience and good exercise. In addition to getting lost in corn, Schaefers has a pumpkin patch, hay rides and a lot of space for little ones to run around. Make the short drive to Mayflower between now and Nov. 1 to have an “a-maze-ing” time.
There is also the Johnston Pumpkin Farm and Festival in Greenbrier. This place also has a pumpkin patch and hay rides. Kids can visit the petting zoo and watch the animated movie, “Spookley the Square Pumpkin.” If this sounds fun to you and your family, call 501-679-5078 for more information.
If you are looking for something closer to town, try Hidden Valley Farm at 719 Ferncliff. According to about.com, you can pick your own pumpkin, jump on a hayride and see scarecrows and Indian corn and gourds. Admission is $2 per carload on the weekends. Weekdays are free. To find out more, call 501-821-8082.
I suggest you take a camera with you to all of these fun fall events because on Oct. 16, you will get to put all your memories into a scrapbook.
The CALL (Children of Arkansas Loved for a Lifetime) is hosting a scrap-booking weekend called Crop-toberfest. The event starts on Friday, Oct. 16 from 6 p.m. to midnight and goes to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Crop-toberfest costs $65, which includes four meals, snacks, drinks, fun and fellowship. To register, sign up on Facebook under “Friends of The Call” group or e-mail lynnbeardsley@gmail.com. The event will take place at the Chenal Valley Gym at 16025 Taylor Loop Rd. in Little Rock. According to their Web site, their mission is to educate, equip and encourage the Christian community to provide a future and a hope for the children in foster care.
On Friday, Oct. 23 drop by the Verizon Arena in North Little Rock for the 23rd Annual Fish and Fowl dinner. Proceeds from the dinner benefit Brother Paul’s Soup and Shelter. From 5 to 8 p.m. you can fill up on fish and fowl for $10 per person, $6 for children or $80 for a book of 10 tickets. Take-out is also available, call 501-371-0912 for more information about this tasty event.
Let’s change course a little bit and talk about the murder mystery dinner theatre at the MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. On Oct. 21 and 30, enjoy an evening of murder, mayhem and mischief. The dinner includes a brief tour inside an authentic pre-civil war era arsenal, which is said to be one of the most haunted places in all of the southeastern United States. This event will definitely get you ready for Halloween! Tickets are $49 per person. If you are up for this suspenseful dinner, call 501-868-7287.
There are more events happening then space allotted.
I plan on reporting more about Oct. 31 as the date draws closer. The events listed here should keep you occupied until then!
