Lost and found

By Becca Bona

I’ve spent too much of my time visiting various lost and founds. From losing my phone in what seems like every restaurant in Arkansas, to forgetting my lunchbox in grade school … I’ve truly lost it all.
Some would say I’ve especially lost my mind, but that’s a different story that we’ll reserve for another column.
Probably one of the things I lost that was a pretty big blow to me – and my parents – was my shiny green iPod. Those gadgets aren’t cheap, and the fact that I lost it directly out of college was just one of the many ticks on the list of reasons of why I wasn’t exactly a properly functioning adult.
I’m probably still not.
But, based on the haphazard way I packed my belongings after my graduation day, MB and I were always optimistic that I would find the thing, eventually. No such luck. I was pretty sad at the loss, especially because the music on the pod including special playlists curated by friends that now live across the country, plus some of my dad’s more rare vinyl collection that we made digital.
Right after losing it, though, I quit running and listening to music. There simply wasn’t enough time. Luckily for me, though, life has a strange way of working out.
Whilst doing laundry the other day, I rustled around for a few mixed CDs, lamenting the loss of my iPod like I hadn’t done in years. The Rolling Stones were my saviors, and I blasted them loudly, pining the fact that I didn’t have quite the collection I used to.
Between songs, I would duck down to the damp, dark basement, where the laundry is located in our building. It takes quarters, and I was doing a particularly heavy load of stinky towels, when I realized I didn’t have a single quarter left. Not good, considering I needed at least two to come up even.
I searched through every purse and bag in my closet and only came up with one quarter. But then I saw it. My dingy college backpack forlornly stuffed in the corner. It had once been neon green, but my decision to write all over it and plaster stickers and patches on it gave it a camouflaged dullness.
I dumped out the contents only to stumble upon … wait for it … my iPod. A full three years later, in pristine condition, I had found the thing!
My quarter quest was forgotten – laundry and all – and I called MB to tell her the news. She wasn’t too surprised as hiding things from myself seems to be an elite skill I’ve been cultivating for quite some time now.
Only a few hours later did I remember the laundry, as I was too busy charging up the gizmo to see what songs I had discovered.
And although I’m still not quite a properly functioning adult – I had to redo the towels that day – at least I found my lost songs.
Sometimes, it’s all about the small victories.
