Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission awards grants

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission has awarded $5,458 in grants for projects to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War, ACWSC Chairman Tom Dupree announced during the first week of June.

Recipients of Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Grants were:

• Second Chance for Life, El Dorado, $2,000 for the fourth annual Juneteenth Festival

• Pioneer Washington Restoration Foundation, Washington, $1,908 for the eighth annual Red River Heritage Symposium: “War at the Doorstep”

• Boone County Historical and Railway Society, Harrison, $1,550 for a Civil War exhibit at the Boone County Heritage Museum.

Civil War Sesquicentennial Grants of up to $2,000 are awarded four times per year, as funding is available. The next deadline is Friday, Aug. 15.

Civil War Sesquicentennial Grants may be used for, but are not limited to, the following types of projects:

• Development of plans for local commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial

• Speakers’ fees and materials for symposia, conferences and workshops

• Development of museum exhibits or interpretive materials related to local Civil War events

• Development of printed materials, educational software, films, or videos interpreting the Civil War in Arkansas.

The Arkansas Civil War Sesquicentennial Commission is housed within the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program. The AHPP is the Department of Arkansas Heritage agency responsible for identifying, evaluating, registering and preserving the state’s cultural resources. Other agencies are the Arkansas Arts Council, the Delta Cultural Center in Helena, the Old State House Museum, the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission and the Historic Arkansas Museum.
