The Beatles ‘Come Together’ – on Spotify

By Becca Bona

“Becca, have you heard?”

“You can listen to them on Spotify now.”

“I hear they’re even available on Apple Music.”

It’s true, dear readers, one of my greatest wishes has finally come true.

The Beatles. Streaming. On Spotify. Now.

Personally, there’s not a better way to end 2015 and ring in 2016 that I could think of. The world’s British sensation continues to reign over 50 years later as they take to technological services that weren’t around in the ‘60s.

In the few days since the floodgates opened for Beatles fans, interesting data has already been gathered surrounding this re-ignited Bealtemania.

According to The Daily Mail:

– 65 percent of Beatles listeners are under the age of 34 on Spotify. This makes sense as I sit here in my 25th year, listening to “Here Comes The Sun” on that exact streaming service.

– So far, “Come Together” is the most played song, with over 2.3 million streams. Not sure if I would have pegged that song, but in order to add to the data, I plan on playing it next. The Daily Mail reasons that this might be most popular so quickly as it’s the opening song to Abbey Road, The Beatles best-selling album. I’m willing to give that theory some thought.

– In the first three days that The Beatles were available to fans through Spotify, their songs were played 70 million times. After some simple calculations, Spotify reasons that every user on the site could have averaged one Beatles song on/around the Christmas Holiday. I have tears of joy in my eyes at the happy thought.

I missed this craze on Spotify when it was first unleashed, even though both MC and BB have accounts. Honestly, I have most of The Beatles library on my phone, so I usually go there first, but am pumped to be able to reach them from Spotify finally.

I actually have starting listening to them now that I’m back at work, far from the comforts of Christmas dinner and family gatherings.

My family may have been just as excited as me at the news, although I’m the resident Beatles fanatic in the bunch. On Christmas Day I sneaked The Beatles’ “One” album into my Aunt’s kitchen CD player, and the group sitting at the table playing cards started singing and dancing from their seats.

Some five years ago I managed to start an impromptu Beatles sing-a-long at my aunt’s house during one of our many Christmas gatherings.

A couple of cousins, aunts and uncles, BB and I, belted out “Hey Jude” like there was tomorrow. For a second, there wasn’t – we were all in the moment washed away in the music. Then, some of my younger cousins begged us to keep singing so we gave “Here Comes The Sun,” “In My Life,” and “Yellow Submarine” a chance.

Funnily enough the last one was a great hit – the younger cousins loved the beat and goofy whimsy that is Ringo Starr, and of course, that entire song.

I’m glad The Beatles now have a way to catch younger listeners – much like my family sing-a-long – through Spotify.

In lieu of a New Year’s Resolution list, do me a favor, listen to “Something” and don’t forget to share love with yourself and those around you.

Come on 2016, we’re Beatles-ready for you.
