A Streetcar Named Desire

A screening of the timeless classic, “A Streetcar Named Desire,” will be held at the CALS Ron Robinson Theater on January 16 at 7:00 pm.

The 1951 film was adapted from Tennessee Williams’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play of the same name. It is directed by Elia Kazan, and stars Vivien Leigh, Marlon Brando, Kim Hunter, and Karl Malden. The film tells the story of a Mississippi Southern belle, Blanche DuBois, who, after encountering a series of personal losses, seeks refuge with her sister and brother-in-law in a dilapidated New Orleans apartment building.

Doors open at 6:00, and the film will begin promptly at 7:00. It is general admission seating, so please arrive early to secure your seat. Beer, wine, and concessions will be available and there will be complimentary parking for all attendees. Bring your parking ticket from the library parking lot (across from the Main Library on Rock Street) or the parking deck (next to the Main Library on Rock Street) inside the theater, and the box office staff will validate it for you. Valid for paid ticket holders only.

Soups & Stews

Pulaski Tech Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management Institute will host the Southern Cuisine Cooking Series on Soups & Stews. There will be three cooking classes, each priced at $90, but if you sign up for the bundle-deal of all 3, the cost is $250. Classes in this series include Jambalaya, Gumbo, and Crawfish Étouffée. Registrants will leave with recipes, know-how, and full to-go containers.

Thursday, Jan 18, 2024; 5:30 - 8:30 pm: Jambalaya - Jambalaya is an American Creole and Cajun rice dish of French, African, and Spanish influence, consisting mainly of meat and vegetables mixed with rice. Yet, that definition does not come close to describing the delicious goodness of Jambalaya

Thursday, Jan 25, 2024; 5:30 - 8:30 pm: Gumbo - Chicken and sausage gumbo crosses all class barriers, appearing on the tables of the poor as well as the wealthy. Gumbo is often cited as an example of the melting-pot nature of southern cooking: a steaming bowl is one of life’s cherished pleasures.

Thursday, Feb 2, 2024; 5:30 - 8:30pm:  Crawfish Étouffée - Étouffée is a French word, which translated literally means “smothered” or “suffocated.” As a cooking method, seafood is smothered in vegetables with a sauce, resulting in a stew-like seafood dish traditionally served with cooked rice. Join in for a night of roux-making and cooking fun.
